Shop the Look: Luxury Coastal Bedroom Lighting
A luxury coastal bedroom needs lighting that feels airy and warm at the same time: one natural-fiber fixture overhead, white or light-finish sconces or lamps at the bed, and warm 2700K light on dimmers. Choose rattan, abaca, rope, linen and white or plaster finishes, and keep metals soft, like polished nickel or light brass.
Coastal style done well is not about anchors and stripes. It is about light, texture and ease: the washed-out colors of sand and driftwood, woven materials that feel handmade, and a room that looks as good under a lamp at night as it does with the windows open. This shop-the-look room is a primary bedroom in soft white and sand tones, and every fixture in it is chosen to add texture without adding weight.
What lighting fits a coastal bedroom?
Start with materials rather than motifs. The fixtures that read "coastal" without trying share a few qualities:
- Natural fibers. Rattan, abaca, rope and wicker filter light into soft patterns and bring warmth to white walls.
- Light, matte finishes. Plaster white, bleached natural and whitewashed woods keep the palette airy.
- Soft metals. Polished nickel and light antique brass read like sun on water; heavy black iron works only in small doses.
- Linen shades. They diffuse light evenly and echo bedding and curtains.
How do you layer light in a bedroom?
A bedroom needs three layers: a soft ambient source, task light for reading, and one or two accent lamps for evening. In a coastal room, the ambient fixture is usually the statement piece, so it should be textured and generous in scale.
| Layer | Fixture | Placement rule | Bulb |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ambient | Rattan or rope chandelier | Diameter in inches ≈ room length + width in feet; at least 7' clearance, or center it over the foot of the bed | 2700K, dimmable |
| Reading | Swing-arm sconces | Mount about 48–60" from the floor, roughly 20–30" above the mattress top, beside each side of the bed | 2700K–3000K, CRI 90+ |
| Bedside or dresser | Table lamp | Bottom of shade near eye level when sitting up in bed, about 20–24" above the mattress | 2700K, 3-way or dimmable |
| Accent | Wall sconce or floor lamp | Sconce centers around 60–66" from the floor; floor lamp beside a reading chair | 2700K |

How big should a bedroom chandelier be?
Use the same formula as any room: add the length and width in feet to get the diameter in inches. A 13 by 15 foot primary bedroom suggests about a 28-inch fixture. Natural-fiber chandeliers are visually light, so you can comfortably go a few inches larger than the formula without the room feeling crowded. On an 8-foot ceiling, choose a flush or semi-flush form or center the fixture over the foot of the bed where you will not walk beneath it; with 9 feet or more, a hanging chandelier with 7 feet of clearance underneath works well. For more on proportions, see our chandelier size guide.
Sconces or table lamps beside the bed?
Both work, and the choice usually comes down to space. Wall-mounted swing arms free up small nightstands, keep cords out of sight and let each sleeper aim light without disturbing the other. Table lamps add more height and texture, and they are easier to change later. In a coastal bedroom we often use sconces at the bed and save the woven table lamp for a dresser or console, where its texture can be seen from the whole room.
What color temperature is best for a coastal bedroom?
Warm white, around 2700K, for almost everything. Coastal palettes lean on white, sand and pale blue, and cool light turns those colors gray and flat at night. Use 3000K only on dedicated reading lights if you prefer slightly crisper light for books. Put the chandelier and sconces on dimmers so the room can go from getting-ready bright to wind-down dim, and choose CRI 90+ LEDs so natural fibers and linens look rich rather than washed out.
Which finishes work best near the coast?
In a house that is actually by the water, humidity and salt air affect finishes over time, even indoors. A few practical choices help coastal lighting stay beautiful:
- Painted and plaster finishes such as white or plaster white hide minor wear and are easy to keep looking fresh.
- Polished nickel is a good choice for metal accents; wipe it occasionally with a soft dry cloth to keep it bright.
- Natural fibers like rattan and abaca are best kept away from direct water and constant sun. Dust them regularly with a soft brush or a vacuum on low with a brush attachment.
- Brass will warm and darken with time. If you love a living finish, embrace it; if you want it to stay bright, choose a sealed or lighter brass finish.
For bathrooms off the bedroom, porches and outdoor showers, use fixtures with the appropriate damp or wet rating rather than indoor pieces.

Our room: white plank walls, a linen upholstered bed, whitewashed oak floors, a jute rug and sheer curtains. Here is how we lit it.
Currey & Company Phebe Medium Rattan Chandelier in Bleached Natural and Vanilla. A generous, softly shaped rattan chandelier in a bleached natural finish that almost glows against white walls. It hangs centered over the foot of the bed as the room's ambient light and its main source of texture.
Visual Comfort Classic Swing Arm Wall Lamp in White with Linen Shade (W13" x H11" x E23.25"). A classic reading light with a long reach, in a white finish that disappears into light walls. One mounts on each side of the bed so you can angle light onto a book and keep a nightstand clear.
Marie Flanigan Avedon Small Table Lamp in Plaster White Rattan with Linen Shade (W16" x H21.5"). A woven base finished in plaster white, so it reads as texture rather than color. It sits on the dresser opposite the bed and adds a low, warm glow in the evening.
Chapman & Myers Antigua Medium Sconce in Polished Nickel and Natural Abaca (W10.25" x H16.25" x E6.25"). Natural abaca and polished nickel in one piece, the essence of relaxed coastal luxury. A pair flanks the mirror above the dresser, mounted with centers around 60 to 66 inches from the floor.
Currey & Company Lisbon Floor Lamp in Natural Rattan, New Brass and Satin Black. A rattan floor lamp with small brass and black accents that give the room a little definition. Place it beside a reading chair by the window.
Styling tips for a luxury coastal bedroom
- Repeat one natural fiber at least three times. Rattan in the chandelier, lamp and floor lamp ties the room together without matching sets.
- Keep metals light and consistent. Polished nickel and a touch of brass are enough; avoid a third metal.
- Use sheer window treatments. Daylight is part of the lighting plan, and linen sheers filter it the way a rattan shade filters a bulb.
- Anchor with one darker note. A satin black accent, a weathered wood bench or a navy throw keeps the room from floating away.
- Hide the bulbs. Woven shades and linen should do the diffusing; if you can see a bare bulb from the bed, adjust the height or choose a different shade.

Frequently asked questions
What kind of light fixture is best for a coastal bedroom?
A natural-fiber chandelier or pendant in rattan, rope, abaca or wicker is the most effective single choice, because it adds texture and filters light softly. Pair it with white or light-finish sconces or lamps with linen shades at the bed, and keep metals to polished nickel or light brass for a relaxed, luxurious feel.
Can you put a chandelier in a bedroom with 8-foot ceilings?
Yes, with care. Choose a flush or semi-flush fixture, or hang a compact chandelier over the foot of the bed where nobody walks beneath it. Anywhere people walk, keep at least 7 feet of clearance under the fixture. Natural-fiber designs are visually light, so they suit lower ceilings better than heavy metal or crystal.
How high should bedside swing-arm sconces be mounted?
Mount bedside swing-arm sconces about 48 to 60 inches from the floor, which places the shade roughly 20 to 30 inches above the top of the mattress. The exact height depends on your bed and headboard, so sit up in bed and measure to about shoulder height. The light should fall on your book, not in your eyes.
What color light bulb is best for a bedroom?
Warm white around 2700K is best for most bedrooms because it feels relaxing and flatters skin tones and fabrics. For reading lights, 2700K or 3000K both work. Choose dimmable LEDs with a CRI of 90 or higher, and put the main fixture on a dimmer so you can lower the light in the evening.
Do rattan light fixtures look cheap?
Not when they are well made and well scaled. Look for tight, even weaving, a solid frame and a finish that is consistent across the piece. Size them generously, pair them with quality linens and soft metal accents, and use warm light. In a luxury room, rattan reads as relaxed and crafted rather than casual.
